Build it. Substantiate it. Govern it.

I’m a computer scientist and awarded inventor, formerly of IBM Research Australia, now founder and CEO of an Australian fintech. I put that research and executive experience to work in three ways: advising boards and committees, substantiating R&D for Australia’s R&D Tax Incentive, and building proprietary technology from first principles.

02 · Substantiate

R&D Tax Incentive technical advisory for software and AI

Many software R&D Tax Incentive (R&DTI) claims fail not because the work isn’t innovative, but because the technical narrative doesn’t hold up under AusIndustry scrutiny. I’ve been through that process directly, with an Advance Finding for 2022–2025 on LENSELL’s own proprietary method.

R&D Tax Incentive eligibility assessment

For SaaS, AI/ML ventures and founders
  • Pre-lodgement technical eligibility review
  • Narrative review for software and algorithm-based claims

Technical expert support for consultants

For grant consultants and accounting firms
  • Technical narrative review and experimental design framing
  • Independent subcontractor; your firm keeps the client relationship

Novelty & Prior Art Assessment

For claims needing documented novelty
  • Benchmarking against patents and peer-reviewed literature
  • Written evidence for the “new knowledge” test
Innovation Discovery for Boards. Upstream of any claim, a facilitated workshop and written report helping boards of technology companies identify where genuine, defensible innovation sits in their stack, including well beyond generative AI.
Technical assessment only. Not tax, legal or financial advice, not a patentability or freedom-to-operate opinion, and not a registered tax agent service. Fees are confirmed after a no-charge scoping call.

Perspectives

What I’m asked about

Topics where I can offer a practitioner’s view, drawn from research, executive and governance work.

AI and data governance

How boards can see where AI and data are actually used, and weigh the risks and rewards.

Innovation beyond LLMs

Where defensible advantage sits as LLM adoption becomes commoditised: proprietary algorithms, optimisation methods, data architecture and domain-specific modelling.

R&D versus routine development

Telling experimental software work from routine development, and building a technical narrative that holds up to AusIndustry scrutiny.

Evidencing novelty

Benchmarking technology against patents and peer-reviewed literature to show genuine new knowledge.

Future-ready skills

What industry needs from computing graduates, and how course design and accreditation can keep pace.

Data standards and sharing

Data exchange, business reporting standards such as XBRL, and policy submissions to government.

Track record
